While you may have learned the symbol for pound as a child, that sign (#) today is called a hashtag.  And in the world of Social Media, it turns any word or phrase into a searchable link.  It is used so that users on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google Plus can track and join discussions on topics based on hashtagged key words or phrases.

As a part of the IMEC Labs Test Group, we have been running some tests to see whether or not tweeting a link to a page that is otherwise invisible to Google can cause it to be crawled and indexed. The short story is this is: Yes, it might.

You can now easily retrieve the oldest tweet available for any search term in a single step. You can use it find how old a link is or for finding the original source on Twitter.

Twitter’s memory is about to get a lot better. 

The company announced today that it has indexed all public tweets and will be giving users the ability to search through the full body of Twitter’s roughly half trillion posts.

Twitter’s search has long been incomplete because the company’s engineers focused on sifting through real-time output. The real-time search engine, an inverted index of about a week’s worth of tweets, has been supplemented since 2012 with about 2 billion “top tweets” and in 2013 that link was made more robust.

PEOPLE who frequent social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have come to rely on the news feed as a crucial filter that sifts through news, personal stories, trends and facts on their behalf.

So it is no wonder that many people have strong opinions about how those companies handle their feeds.

Those opinions have become more vocal recently, as the companies have adjusted the feeds. The point of the changes, the companies say, is to make the feeds more interesting, engaging or profitable.

Love being able to compare key metrics across social nets.Wish they had stayed with the SAME metric for time on site throughout however. They switch from days to months and that makes Instragam appear as if it has more time on site than Facebook (it doesn't).

A new infographic based on statistics published by the Huffington Post lists 100 of the most fascinating figures from 2012, focusing on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram & Google+.

More than 1 million websites integrated with Facebook since the beginning of 2012. with a reported 80% of users preferring to connect with brands via the social site. With 23% of people checking their accounts five or more times a day, it's hard to miss an advertising opportunity.

Rival social network Google+ could become real competition, garnering 625,000 new members every day of last year. Of those millions of people, active users reportedly spend more than 60 minutes a day across Google products, averaging 12 minutes per day with Google+.

Meanwhile, micro-blogging site Twitter held its own last year. The average user tweeted 307 times over the course of 2012...

Business-to-business social media marketing has always been a harder nut to crack than its business to consumer counterpart. A new study suggests that a refusal to embrace new social channels might be one reason why.

While more B2B marketers are using social media sites than ever before, Facebook (83 percent), Twitter (80 percent) and LinkedIn (80 percent) are far and away the platforms of choice for the majority of brands, with YouTube (61 percent) and Google+ (39 percent) rounding out the top five.

Pinterest is used by just one in four B2B marketers (26 percent), and Instagram less than one in ten (7 percent).
