Is it Possible to Gamify a Boring Task? A: Yes, but... Gamification Co | Must Play | Scoop.it
The reality is… you enjoy playing games. We’ve been playing games since the days of cavemen, and it is your nature to compare yourself to see how you measure up to others.

Games drive emotions, build loyalty, and create character.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I agree gamification of a boring task is possible, but doesn't scale well. My thought would be to redesign the task so it is less boring. One way to do that is reduce the task down and inject more game elements.

Another way to remake a boring task is to find out why its BORING. Everything is better WITH other people. I'm Riffing Andre W Chen's excellent How To Create A Social Product on Scenttrail Marketing right now: http://www.scenttrail.com/riffing-andre-w-chen-how-to-design-successful-social-products/

Relevant because Andre discusses the feedback loops needed to keep engagement across different segments and personas. Same applies to gamifying a boring task.

Why CONTESTS Are KING: Crowdsource Content & Build Community & Work Great on Social via @HomesDotCom

Erica Campbell Byrum - Homes.com, Social Fresh EAST 2014
Erica Byrum takes a bit to get rolling, you can begin watching at 1:41, but what she is saying about crowdsourcing content via contests is valuable so hang with it.

The real diamond is how contests unearth your 1% Contributors and 9% supporters. Homes.com was smart enough to immediately give thier 1% a mission and I love and plan to steal the "Blogger Ambassador Program" great name add a Social Media Ambassador and you have two sticks you can rub together to create fire.

Stay with this video to hear about the power of serendipitous content their content unearthed, content Homes.com was smart enough to double down on. The Contest was a flop, they thought until they stumbled over the single piece of content that "continues to give back to us this day fast forwarding 3 years later".

Homes.com doesn't do what I would suggest - create a page with a clear Call To Action (an ask) to join the Blogger Ambassador program. Instead they surface their 1% Contributors via contests:  http://blog.homes.com/category/contests/

I like the dedicated page that explains benefits, shares why you created the program and how your Blogger Ambassadors program. Inside of some things I don't agree with (cash is always a powerful incentive) are great tips I do agree with (surprise works, double down on what works, give 1% Contributors a job, use no more than 2 social nets at once). So more GOOD advice than BAD here.

"Contests create gifts that keep on giving" says Eric Campbell Byrum from Homes.com.

Blowing It: Furious Scrabble Fans Boycott After Upgrade Wipes Contacts & Scores

Blowing It: Furious Scrabble Fans Boycott After Upgrade Wipes Contacts & Scores | Must Play | Scoop.it
Furious Scrabble fans boycott Facebook's version of board game after hard ...
Daily Mail
Thousands of silver surfers have joined a boycott of Scrabble after the popular online version of the board game was replaced.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Community Means THEY Control YOU

Scrabble/s Facebook game upgraded last week. Upgrades are normally a good thing not this time.

This time Scrabble wiped scores and contacts from players. Player who built up online relationships by playing the game DAILY are furious and now boycotting the game.

Yet another lesson in online community. Once a community is formed, what every Internet marketer wants, it must be treated with kid gloves and great care.

Community means YOU (the creator of the community) aren't in control anymore. Best to do ANYTHING with consultation and testing since to do otherwise risks the wrath of power members and bad press.

And WHY would you ever do otherwise? The value of community is its ability to provide feedback, sale and reach. Having worked hard to gain so many brand advocates it is important to understand they don't come FREE.

Community requires CARE and FEEDING and Scrabble forgot that lesson here and is now paying the price.
